The short answer, Yes! Not having backups of your data can either make or break a potentially disastrous situation. With the recent increase of the different forms of Malware and Ransomware, not having backups of your data is one of the worst things you can do.
As the City of Atlanta recently learned when hit with the SamSam ransomware. Not having backups could have turned the situation from a problem into an unrecoverable disaster. However, they did have backups, so it was not as bad as it could have been. While it still took a few days to get everything back up and running the way it should have been. If they did not have the backups, they could have been down for a much longer time.
Backups are not only useful for protection against attacks either. There are some instances that I have come across where the operating system failed and having a backup made getting the user running at full capacity again much easier and smoother. Being able to reinstall the operating system and restore their files from backup makes everyone’s life easier. Not only does the user not lose any data, the time they are without their computer and data is lower.
In the business world, having backups is a major lifesaver. Not only can you rely on it as a failsafe, but it will also save you time, effort, and not to mention- Money.
